Batchim practice

The final consonant of a Korean syllable rarely sounds the way it is written. This quiz drills the three things that trip learners up most: how a batchim actually sounds, how it links to the next syllable, and which consonant of a double batchim is voiced.

Why a quiz just for batchim

Most beginner Korean apps teach the alphabet and stop. But reading real Korean breaks down at the batchim: you learn that ㅅ is s, then meet 옷 and hear ot. This tool focuses only on that gap. It does not teach you letters from scratch. It takes learners who already know Hangul shapes and fixes the pronunciation rules that make reading feel unpredictable.

Three modes

Final consonant sounds. A word appears and you pick the sound its batchim really makes, out of the seven possible final sounds. This is where 부엌 becomes [부억] and 꽃 becomes [꼳].

Liaison (linking). When a batchim is followed by a vowel, it slides into the next syllable. You choose the correct spoken form: 꽃이 reads [꼬치], 밥을 reads [바블].

Double batchim (겹받침). Clusters like ㄺ, ㄼ and ㅄ have two consonants but usually voice only one. You pick which one wins: 닭 is [닥], 값 is [갑].

Every answer explains itself

Getting a question wrong is where the learning happens, so each answer reveals the real pronunciation in Hangul plus romanization and a one-line rule. Missed items are collected at the end so you can review them in one place before playing again.

Frequently asked questions

What is batchim in Korean?

Batchim (받침) is the final consonant at the bottom of a Korean syllable block, like the ㄱ in 각 or the ㄺ in 닭. Its written form and its actual sound are often different, which is exactly what this tool drills.

Why does a batchim sound different from how it is written?

At the end of a syllable Korean collapses many consonants into just seven sounds: ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅇ. So ㅋ, ㄲ and ㄺ all sound like [k], and ㅅ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅌ, ㅎ all sound like [t]. That is why 부엌 sounds like [부억].

What is liaison?

When a syllable ending in a batchim is followed by a vowel, the batchim moves over and starts the next syllable. 꽃이 is read [꼬치], and 밥을 is read [바블].

How is a double batchim pronounced?

A double batchim has two consonants but usually only one is voiced at the end of a word. 닭 is read [닥] and 값 is read [갑]. The double batchim mode drills which one wins.

Is there audio?

The quiz works fully without audio and every answer shows the real pronunciation in Hangul and romanization. Native-voice audio is being added, so a Listen button will appear on each word once the recordings are ready.
